Traditional neon moth for Drawn to the Light

Carousel Lights were asked to produce Drawn to the Light’s logo as a traditional glass neon sign.

The awesome lighting designers, Drawn to the Light, approached Carousel Lights, asking if we could bring their logo to life as a neon sign for their new office in London. This is how we did it.

Traditional glass neon

Drawn to the Lights’ logo was perfectly suited to being made as a neon logo sign. Various iterations of the design were drawn up, including a yellow vinyl in-fill to block the wings in colour, but with the glass neon being mounted directly to the client’s own wall, it was decided that glass-only was the way to go.

The final design was set at 800mm (w) which gave plenty of room for glass-bending, so starting with 1.5m lengths of 10mm Yellow coated glass tubes, they were heated over the open flame and then followed the pattern of a 100% scale template of the drawing. Templates normally need to be printed as mirror-images, but as the design is horizontally symmetrical this wasn’t necessary.

Once the neon was produced and the electrodes were added, blockout paint was added. The glass was deliverd to the client along with silicone electrode covers, tube supports, a mounting template and specialist neon transformer.
