Taylor approached us for help making a neon sign for an exhibition she was having at Wilton Way Galley, London. Taylor’s art is inspired by 1970s magazines that she finds around the UK, and the idea that she had in mind for the design was of woman holding a whip.
During the initial conversations with Taylor, as is the case on most neon art pieces that we produce, the discussion revolved around what Taylor wanted to achieve, with Carousel Lights then advising on the practicalities of how we can bring that idea to life as closely as possible whilst incorporating the constraints that come with producing real neon lights as art installations.
The key considerations we made were:
Neon colour – Neon colours are achieved by one of three methods: the colours of the glass, the powder lining the inside of the glass and the colour of gas in the tubes (argon = blue, neon = red). We therefore looked at Taylor’s initial designs and suggested colours from our sample board that would be closest to them.
Complexity of design and glassbending – When we received Taylor’s design, the first thing we look at is the tightness of the smallest glass bends when the design is at 100% scale. If we use thinner glass then we can get tighter bends, but this in turn affects the visual aesthetic of the neon, so there’s often a trade-off of the design that an artist is trying to achieve mixed with what’s actually achievable with the limitations of glass bending.
Neon mounting – How the glass was to be mounted was discussed with Taylor. If neon’s mounted directly to a wall then it makes it very difficult to move at a later date, and a place needs to be found to locate the transformer. Mounting to a substrate is a more common method used, and one which we used for Taylors piece.
Neon Glass: Ruby red lips, yellow hair, clear red knickers/bra, superblue eyes/eyebrows/whip, pink arms/body/suspenders.
Mount: Neon mounted to 10mm contour-cut exhibition-grade polished clear acrylic.
Extra: Black blockout paint, black silicone electrode covers, transformer located on rear of acrylic.
Size: 800mm (w) x 1090mm (h)
We absolutely loved working with Taylor. It was an utter joy and seeing the piece come to life was fantastic.
I had such a great time working with you guys, you were really accommodating and helpful – I’d love to work with you all again, should the opportunity arise.
